Yixing Clay Teapots, 300 ml

Yixing clay teapots come from Yixing, a city in Jiangsu province, China. Potters there have worked with this clay for over 500 years. Tea lovers around the world still choose it for brewing oolong, pu’erh and black tea.

The clay is called zisha, which means “purple sand.” It stays slightly porous after firing. This lets the teapot breathe and hold heat evenly. With every brew, the walls absorb a little of the tea’s aroma and oils. Over time the teapot develops a soft natural shine and a deeper flavor in the cup. Many owners keep one teapot for one type of tea for this reason.

Our collection includes classic purple clay, red clay and black clay teapots. Some have clean simple shapes. Others carry carved calligraphy, painted flowers and birds, or small sculpted details on the lid and handle. Each teapot holds 300 ml, a good size for two to four people or for several short gongfu infusions.

How to care for your teapot

Rinse it with hot water before the first use. Never use soap or detergent, because the clay absorbs it. After brewing, empty the leaves, rinse with hot water and let it dry with the lid off. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth now and then to bring out the shine.

A Yixing teapot gets better the more you use it. Start with one tea you love and let the pot grow with it.
